If you have BPD and you are reading this, donât feel shamed by this statement. I first felt shame about it too, and it was hard to hear my therapist say it at first. But, upon reflection of this statement and looking at it deeper, it can be a great tool during stressful circumstances. It could actually work in your favor. For instance, if as BPD people, letting go of the need to be treated as special could give us the power to not take things quite as personally and to lay down the feeling of being attacked. This is an issue for me and has been during my twenties. As an adult, I have felt the strong need to be hyper-vigilant because of feeling anxious, attacked or constantly living in a threatened state. Recently, a podcast I listened to stated to be careful about using the word, âattacked,â because that was a strong word. I understand that, but I donât know what other words to use rather than to mention the word âattacked.â I donât know what this feeling is or where it stems from, but I do know that it is a BPD mindset and mentality which causes this feeling. When these feelings arise, and I start to get upset because of the actions of strangers or loved ones, I can stop and think to myself, âThis is normal, subjective behavior of this person and maybe if I remove my bias in this circumstance, it will not affect my emotions or cause me to feel negative feelings towards the person inflicting this behavior which I donât personally approve of.â Just with this simple realization, it can make you stronger to your surroundings or to circumstances which you feel like the odd one out or as if you are on the defense constantly. You will see the world through a new, enlightened perspective when you participate in chakra balancing. If someone tells me that they only do a strength workout, I always ask them if they do cardio or suggest yoga. Also, I feel as if I have good advice to those who are becoming a vegetarian or vegan because of having the amazing gift of a nutritionist who spoke with me about what I should be eating. In my 20âs, especially mid-20âs to now, I have struggled with impulsive reactions to situations which are outside of my control. It can be something small, like living in an area which is noisy and openly getting upset at a car or loud passerby, or something big, like reacting to a preconceived notion about a relationship which may not be entirely true. BPD people, and introverts, can develop a hypersensitivity to their surroundings. This happens to me, and sometimes I can overreact to trivial things like loud noises and commotion. This behavior ends up damaging my personal sense of self, because I have acted out in a socially unaccepted way, or in a hurtful way, and this ends up being something which I am not proud of and ends up making me feel bad about myself. How is it going to feel for the person on the other end of the relationship when I accuse them of something they may not be guilty of? You shouldnât pressure or overwhelm yourself in your shift, but rather go at your own pace and do what makes you feel comfortable. If you are flexible, you are a faster runner, if you do cardio, your muscles are toned for doing a strength work out. Unfortunately, we rarely hear stories about people who have taken their control and their lives back from this illness. ) Eventually, I went on a biologic medicine which essentially cleared my skin. I lived psoriasis free for years, and forgot that I even had the diagnosis. The medicine worked really well with me, but the only down side to biologic medicines are that they suppress your immune system. It is easier to get an infection while taking them, or get sick. I did notice that I got sick more often on the medicine. You will naturally want to fill that time with a physically active activity once you start exercising. The second thing you can do to break hypervigilance is to place trust in others by creating relationships. Creating relationships and putting effort into this part of your life is so important because most of us with BPD have difficulty with relationships, which can lead to not having them at all. For me personally, I know that I have completely abandoned the idea of having healthy relationships and havenât put much effort into it because of my BPD cycles and tendencies. Going through RODBT therapy, I have learned that placing effort into relationships can radically change my outlook and I may be able to maintain a better quality of life by focusing on other people and maintaining strong relationships. Because I tend to be over-controlled, I sacrifice my relationships or social interactions in order to maintain by rigid lifestyle. For those of you who have more impulsive BPD tendencies, and I struggle with this also, you may have the impulse to cause arguments or snap at those close to you, creating a barrier and tension in that relationship. When you start to work on strategies and behavioral methods to communicate with others more positively and build stronger relationships, you will be able to maintain better family relationships and friendships. Placing your trust in others and having people who will be there for you, and when you have the ability to be there for them, will help ease your survival, hypervigilant mindset because you will no longer feel like an island on to yourself, or the urge to shut people out constantly out of fear or mistrust. The next move would be jumping jacks to keep that heart rate elevated, then sit ups. We are so used to meat, eggs and milk as staples, it is hard to imagine replacing these items in our diet, but it isnât as hard as you think! It can be a really powerful feeling. I know that I cannot rely on other people for happiness, but my loneliness feels inevitable and unbreakable. Now, when I grocery shop, I make sure to buy something that I like such as chips or vegan yogurt, but I still focus the bulk of my groceries on non-processed, whole foods. I buy avocados regularly.  While everyone else was smiling and seemed perfectly comfortable, I looked like I had been photo-shopped into the picture. This was a wake-up call to me and evidence that the way I was usually feeling really showed and that most other people most likely could sense that I didnât feel I belonged. It is sometimes hard to understand the effect you may have or how you may come across to others, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and when I saw that my emotions and feelings came across to my peers as not fitting in or being a part of the group, it led me to realize that my BPD emotions are on display for the world to see. âThese survivors hit their mark in helping to change the conversation about borderline personality disorder (BPD)." Days like today reminds me that although I am fortunate to be independent and have a job, it is sad that I donât spend it being enthralled in positive relationships or enjoying others company. The routine is what has stuck with me from Ayurveda which I would recommend to anyone. Monday through Friday, I wake up at 6:00 A.M., even if I donât have plans that day or have to be anywhere. This is gross, but I scrape my tongue first thing, and brush my teeth. Cleaning the mouth is important to clear bacteria, because this keeps your intestines from digesting bacteria which has accumulated in your mouth overnight. The next step in my routine is drinking a warm glass of water. This helps to promote digestion. Ayurveda teaches it is good to have a bowel movement in the morning because it removes toxins from your body. Then, I meditate for a couple of minutes, and do yoga for around 10-15 minutes. On a good morning, I do a cardiovascular or strength workout following yoga. Some mornings, I may not have time so I skip this step, but I always feel better when do a workout after yoga. I usually either run, or do a HIIT type workout combining strength and cardio. After this, Ayurveda teaches to massage yourself with oil before a shower, but I donât do this because it is a bit unrealistic and messy. I donât find I have the time for it, so I skip this step and take a shower. Showering is important for cleanliness and detoxing. After this, I usually eat breakfast. At this point in the morning, it is around 7:45-8:00 A.M. This routine usually takes about 2 hours. If I have to be somewhere, I may shorten some of the steps if necessary.Â, This routine leaves me feeling fantastic for my day! My mood is generally really elevated and regulated. I donât feel depression or as strong of anxiety. Yoga and meditation are both proven to reduce anxiety and depression. I have stronger mental clarity. I would suggest for anyone to stay on this routine. It shows respect for mother nature and the circadian rhythms which are natural to humans. We should rise with the sun and set with the sun as well. It is what she intended for us.Â.
